A dental crown is a tooth-shaped ‘cap’ that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape ,size, strength and often improve its appearance. Crowns are cemented into place and fully encase the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gumline.
They are often needed when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of a tooth, especially when a tooth has had to have root canal treatment. Sometimes a post is required to retain the crown if there is not enough natural tooth tissue left. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials depending where in the dentition they are placed, and whether provided on an NHS or private course of treatment.
